Debuting for the first time outside of the United Arab Emirates is the Tirhal Collection, conceptualized by Lithuanian-born textile designer Loreta Bilinskaite-Monie for Al Ghadeer Emirati Crafts. Tirhal’s (meaning ‘journey’) launch marks a contemporary revival of, and tribute to, traditional Emirati design, carrying us through from ancient tribal roots to modern day society.

Lithuanian-born textile designer Loreta Bilinskaite-Monie creates the new Tirhal collection for Al Ghadeer Emirati Crafts. The collection is launching for the first time beyond the United Arab Emirates and delivers a modern iteration of traditional Emirati design. The word ‘Tirhal’ means ‘journey’ and it is meant to take those through a celebration of its ancient tribal roots to today’s society.

AL GHADEER UAE CRAFTS X LORETA MONIE – AL SADU DANCE (2019)
Delivered as part of Louvre Abu Dhabi’s 2019 National Day celebrations, this contemporary performance piece was inspired by Al Sadu, a traditional form of weaving practised by Bedouin women in rural communities of the United Arab Emirates to produce soft furnishings and decorative accessories for camels and horses from the hair of camels and goats.
Loreta Bilinskaite-Monie on Tashkeel
Loreta Bilinskaite-Monie was born in Lithuania and studied at Central Saint Martins School – University of the Arts London. She moved to Dubai in 2003 and is constantly inspired by the traditions and cultures of the Middle East and has participated in several exhibitions and initiatives, including solo presentations ‘Madafati (Home Away from Home)’ (The Third Line, 2010) and Downtown Design Dubai 2018.
Play: a group exhibition
Lithuanian artist Loreta Bilinskaite-Monie, who lives in Dubai, is exhibiting a self-portrait photograph in which she is dressed in traditional clothing from her home country. The playfulness of this image comes from the fact that all the clothes and accessories the artist is wearing were sourced and made entirely in the city’s Satwa district. Bilinskaite-Monie wears vivid coloured fabrics, a headscarf and a floral hair piece to create a look that is typically Lithuanian, and yet embraces many aspects of Emirati life.

Madafati is the Arabic word for a place that is a home away from home. Loreta Bilinskaite-Monie has chosen this as the title of her first exhibition in Dubai because it perfectly describes how she feels about the city and the UAE.

“Darling, I’ve bought you some crack,” purrs Loreta, striding in my front door. “From Satwa.” The crack in question is actually Krack, an antiseptic cream for sore heels, purchased from an area of Dubai known for its bargain basement outlets full of Burberry and Tods, besides the odd illegal substance. To our next meeting, the six-foot-something artist and sometime catwalk model brought a box of Forever Rosemary, the well known “ambassador’s chocolates.”
